Abstract
Despite consistent turnover in health care chief executive officer (CEO) and president
positions, nurse leaders remain a minority in these roles. Nurses have served as heads
of hospitals for hundreds of years, dating back to the days of Florence Nightingale.
Evidence demonstrates the critical impact of nurse leaders in improving clinical and
organizational outcomes, as well as the portability of their knowledge and skills
into these positions. In order to increase the percentage of nurses in CEO and president
roles, nurse leaders, researchers, academicians, and professional organizations will
need to galvanize behind an intentional, structured, and unified strategy.
